Exodus is an artistic creation by choreographer Athanasia Kanellopoulou, inspired by and responding to the 1989 novel The Melancholy of Resistance by Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai. The novel’s portrayal of characters spiraling into self-destruction, as their revolutionary attempts falter, serves as a foundation for this exploration of societal and individual power structures.
The performance unfolds through a series of fragmented revolutionary acts, where collective and personal identities are deconstructed to find an “exodus”—a pathway to redemption and fulfillment. The dancers’ movements depict a gradual rebellion, embodying remnants of ruins while searching the depths of their personal and collective histories.
How many borders and bridges must they cross to reach their ultimate destination?
How many walls must they break, and how many circles must they create, to uncover their buried history?
Exodus narrates this transformative journey and reflects on the human desire for liberation and self-discovery.
